Wirtgen China Awarded CNY20 Million Contract For Hamm Compactors

Beijing, China (August 18, 2010) /ChinaNewswire.com/ — China International Water and Electric Corp. has awarded Wirtgen China a contract, worth CNY 20 million, for 24 Hamm Single Drum Compactors to be used on the construction of the dam complex at Upper Atbara in Sudan.

The dam complex project is located in eastern Sudan and has a total contract value of USD838 million. The project is financed by the government of the Sudan, and the engineering and construction of the complex is scheduled to last about 6 years. This is the largest single project contracted to Chinese companies in Sudan at the moment.

The project is composed of two dams. The main functions of which are irrigation, water supply, and power generation. After completion of the project, the dam complex will form a reservoir storage capacity of about 3 billion cubic meters. It will irrigate an area of about 500,000 hectares, and 7 million people will benefit from the irrigation. It will also provide drinking water for 3 million people. Its power generation capacity will supply 1 million people.

The contract is for the following equipment: Nine units of Hamm compactor type 3520 with an operating weight of 20 tons; nine units of Hamm compactor type 3520 P (Padfood shells) with an operating weight of 20 tons; and six units of Hamm compactor type 3412 with an operating weight of 12 tons.

Wirtgen Green Mix Technology On Xitong Expressway Improvement Project Saves CNY28 Million

Economical efficient and environmentally friendly use of Wirtgen Green Mix cold recycling technology with foamed bitumen cuts costs, reduces emissions and saves on material.

Beijing, China (August 03, 2010) /ChinaNewswire.com/ — On June 28th, 2010, after being closed for 53 days, the southern half of the Tongguan to Xian section of the Lianhuo Expressway improvement and widening project was reopened with four lanes in two directions. This is the first expressway in China which has been improved and widened on large scale using Green Mix foamed bitumen cold recycling technology from Wirtgen. As the existing pavement material was reused as efficiently as possible, the cost saving was around CNY 28,000,000. This provides a reference example for highway overhaul, improvement and widening in Shanxi province with clear economic efficiency and environment benefits from this project.

A traditional pavement overhaul focuses mainly on substitution and strengthening. Substitution results in higher costs, longer time duration, and a more complex project. A large quantity of milled material would not be reused properly, resulting in waste and pollution. Strengthening has the drawbacks that pavement bearing capacity can not be meaningfully increased and pavement defects can not be effectively eliminated. With the advent of the 21st century, many high-class roads need to be maintained and repaired or improved — around 12% of pavement needs to be overhauled every year – and this requires a total quantity of around 2,200,000 tons of existing pavement material. Recycling of this material and reusing it in new construction and repair of pavement, will be not only be environmentally friendly, but will also result in major cost savings. Especially in western area of the country, reusing large quantity of existing pavement material, will reduce pollution, conserve water and soil, and allow the building of more roads with less investment. So, it has very important effect.

Recently Wirtgen's Green Mix foamed bitumen technology has become more and more popular, both in China and abroad. It provides a new method for modernized cost effective repair and maintenance of roads. "Individual study of foamed bitumen cold recycling" was supported by technology finance from Ministry of Finance, and was declared to be a technology development project for Shaanxi province. When this study is finished, the annual cost saving on material through recycling will be CNY1.500 billion.

In foamed bitumen technology water is injected into hot bitumen, making it expand and become bitumen foam. The foam will settle down after a short time. The foam bitumen becomes millions of tiny particles spread over fine material and forms a slurry. After mixing and compaction, it will bind the coarse particles and make the pavement course stable. Compared to traditional methods, the advantages of foamed bitumen technology include: long time storage of mix, higher shear strength, and less sensitivity of the mix to water.

With regard to energy saving, Green Mix foamed bitumen has a number of very strong points. According to Mr. Li Jingde, in traditional design, bitumen content of the asphalt base course is 3.4%, and for the binder course it is 4.4%. When using foamed bitumen, existing material will be reused extensively, saving crushed stone. When paving on hard shoulders, it replaces binder and base courses with a bitumen content of only 2.1%. This equates to saving half of the bitumen. He says the detailed calculations are as follows: "The cost of 12 cm base course is CNY 98/m², the cost of 6 cm binder course is CNY 61/m², resulting in a total cost of both courses together of CNY159/m². The cost of 18 cm foamed bitumen course is only CNY76/m². So, replacing the base and binder courses with foamed bitumen mix gives a cost saving of CNY 83/m². That is CNY 259,790 cost saving per kilometer. The total foamed bitumen recycled material in Xsitong expressway project is about 61,800 m³, and gives a total cost saving of around CNY28,000,000. It really makes waste profitable." Further more, foamed bitumen recycling requires less labor and investment in machines. It cures naturally and this can be finished within two days in thesummer time. In comparison the traditional water spreading curing method needs seven days.

As a new road technology, foamed bitumen recycling has been tested and applied throughout the country. But, for expressway improvement and widening like Xitong expressway project, there is no experience or reference data. Xitong expressway improvement and widening is the first project in China to use this design and construction and to benefit from major savings in cost material and emissions.

Germany's Wirtgen Recycling Technology Makes Major Emission Reductions In China

Beijing, China (July 16, 2010) /ChinaNewswire.com/ — Research in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, has shown that the application of foamed bitumen cold recycling technology using equipment supplied by Germany-headquartered Wirtgen China can make major savings in heating energy, reduce carbon emissions, and provide a very high utility ratio for recycled materials.

Laboratory tests and practical experience of outdoor paving on trial road sections led the Hangzhou Highway Administrative Bureau to apply foamed bitumen cold recycling technology to overhaul projects on 32 national and provincial roads. Statistics from the bureau show that on 249 kilometers of road 480,000 tons of bitumen wastes had been recycled with a 90% utility ratio. Compared to conventional hot bitumen technology the construction period was reduced by 20%; the heating energy required was reduced by 60%; and carbon emissions were reduced by 80%.

Commenting on the statistics from the Hangzhou Highway Administrative Bureau experts from the Emission Reduction Department of China's Ministry of Communications upheld the results. The experts stated that foamed bitumen cold recycling technology will make full use of old materials, reduce energy consumption, reduce carbon dioxide emissions, improve pavement performance and shorten the construction period. They added that practical experience shows that foamed bitumen cold recycling is a mature technology, with good pavement performance, giving energy savings and lower costs.

The experts went on to recommend that foamed asphalt cold recycling technology can be applied to highways, first grade roads, second grade roads and other grades of road overhaul and maintenance projects. The expert's report concluded that the foamed bitumen cold recycling design and construction technical specification drawn up by Zhejiang province (DB33 / T 715-2008) can serve as a reference standard for the promotion of foamed bitumen cold recycling technology in China's national transportation industry.

China's Roads Benefit From Wirtgen's Bitumen Stabilized Paving Recycling Technology

Technology from Wirtgen China is reducing the carbon footprint associated with reconstructing China's roads and providing road users with a more durable highway resulting in less traffic disruption.

Beijing, China (April 20, 2010) /ChinaNewswire.com/ — More and more cities and highway authorities in China are benefiting from Germany-based company Wirtgen's bitumen stabilized paving recycling technology, which conserves energy, reduces the demand for new materials, and produces a more durable road surface.

Wirtgen's recycling technology involves milling the existing road paving material and then mixing with an emulsion or foam of bitumen suspended in water together with a small amount of cement or lime. The bitumen acts as a flexible binding agent coalescing the milled particles together and also limits the ingress of water into the road base since the hydrophobic nature of bitumen inhibits water entering a layer of well-compacted material. Water entering the road base is a major factor in causing roads to deteriorate, particularly in parts of China that are subject to hot wet summers and freezing winters.

Initially regarded as a "poor man's" asphalt concrete, field performance has proved the case to be different and only recently have the non-continuous binding properties of these materials been appreciated. Results emanating from applied research efforts (primarily in South Africa, the Netherlands, and the USA) are now providing an understanding of the behaviour of these materials (particularly the non-continuously bonding) and their potential. The results of these studies suggest that the energy consumption associated with relaying a road can be reduced by a factor of up to three compared to older and more conventional technologies. In addition the grater durability of roads laid with this technique further reduces the expense and energy consumption associated with road repairs.

The adoption of this technology by the Chinese road authorities for rehabilitating their expressways that has opened up new research avenues which promise to be larger than everything done to date. Intentions to employ recently acquired accelerated testing facilities on these pavements are encouraging as they can only result in a better understanding of these materials, thereby advancing the technology.

The Yunnan Highway Bureau, for example, has successfully used three Wirtgen WR2500S units and a KMA200 unit, in their rehabilitation of the national highway network. This 800,000.00 square meters recycling job will be completed this year and the road owner is expecting to make cost savings of 30% compared to conventional methods. And Xi'an is using two Wirtgen WR2500S units on their municipal road rehabilitation. Changan Road in the city was repaired in 2009 with cost and energy savings combined and the benefit of reduced disruption to traffic due to a faster turn-round.

Wirtgen China Will Help To Cut Demolition Waste Onsite

Recycling Of Demolition Waste, Demolished Concrete, And Spoil Onsite Cuts Material Costs And Carbon Emissions

Beijing, China (February 10, 2010) /ChinaNewswire.com/ — Germany-based Wirtgen Group is to introduce onsite-recycling technology developed by its Kleemann GmbH subsidiary into China when it will be showcased in China at Bauma China in Shanghai in November 2010.

Kleemann GmbH recycling plants take demolition waste, demolished concrete, and spoil and convert into high-quality aggregate for the construction industry. By recycling demolition waste onsite the process can dramatically reduce the amount of energy and CO2 emissions required in hauling material away from a demolition site. And instead of demolition waste ending up in land-fill or being used as low grade hardcore it can be used as aggregate for the next building project on that site: thus reducing material costs and the need to extract fresh aggregate by quarrying.

The core of the process is a Kleemann impact crusher which is fed with demolition material that has been screened for size with large particles (more than 60mm grain size) being fed into the crusher while smaller particles are put aside for further processing. The crushed aggregate is then separated at 20 mm, 40 mm and 100 mm sizes, and is then cleaned from light materials. The ferrous metals contained in the demolition waste and demolished concrete are then removed by electromagnets and go for recycling in steel plants. The recycled product can then be used in the next building project on the same site.

And example of this technology in action Europe's largest recycling plant is located in the vicinity of Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport. The turnkey plant was designed and built by Kleemann for processing demolition waste, demolished concrete and asphalt into high-quality aggregate for the construction industry. It includes, among other units, Kleemann's largest impact crusher model SHB 20/160. The recycling plant has a feed capacity of up to 700 tons of material per hour. One year of planning, construction and assembly was needed before the new recycling plant was put into operation. To protect the environment from dust and noise, the entire plant was enclosed with a trapezoidal panel construction.

The recycled product is upgraded with natural sand and cement to a hydraulically bound base layer, and is presently used for soil stabilization at Schiphol Airport.

The new 480-square-meter kindergarten building has three classrooms, a function room, an office for the teachers, a kitchen, a cloak room, and a guard's room. Currently the kindergarten has five teachers and 50 pupils and they expect to have more than 60 pupils after Chinese New Year 2010.

Wirtgen decided to help Tiantai because it was not as well-known as places that were being mentioned again and again by the media in the aftermath of the earthquake, and it was therefore getting less attention. Rather than give to places that could get help from other sources, the company and its employees preferred to give aid where aid was lacking. The reason for selecting a kindergarten was similar. Primary schools are included in China's nine-year compulsory education system, so the standard primary school buildings in this location had obviously fared much better. Wirtgen Recycling Technology Saves Cost And Energy In China's Xi'an

Wirtgen's high precision recycling and spreading technology reduces the amount of material required and yields a faster project completion on Xi'an's major axial road reconstruction.

Beijing, China (October 14, 2009) /ChinaNewswire.com/ — By using Wirtgen's Streumaster high precision spreading technology for cold recycling of the road surface, together with a Wirtgen WR 2500S Recycler, a Hamm 3625HT single drum compactor, and a Voegele S-1803-2 wheel paver, the Xi'an Management Bureau was able to make major savings in energy and costs when widening and resurfacing Chang'An Nan Lu, the main north-south axial road in the historic city.

China has been using cold recycling of road surfaces for some time and traditionally the stabilizing agents are spread manually. The recycling of the surface of Chang'An Nan Lu required around 11,100 tons of cement. Using the manual spreading method, a total of 444,000 25 kilogram bags of cement would be required. Since it takes around three hours to load and unload a truck load of 800 bags the total time just to load and unload cement bags for this project would be 167 days, or seven months.

For the Chang'an Nan Lu project the Xi'an Management Bureau used a Wirtgen Streumaster SW16 MC mounted on a SX3255DR385 truck from Shaanxi Automobile Group. The tank for the stabilizing agent in the SW16MC has a capacity equal to approximately 20 tons of cement. Since the cement is pumped directly from a silo truck into the Streumaster's tank, and it takes just 30 minutes to fill the tank, this reduced the total time required to load the 11,100 tons of cement on the Chang'An Nan Lu job to around 28 days. With a spreading width of 2.46 meters and spreading the stabilizing agent at a speed of 1.5 kilometers an hour the Streumaster took approximately 10 days to spread the cement on the total area of 370,000 square meters. Thus the total duration of the project was reduced to around 38 days compared to an estimated 137 days using manual methods.

Besides this huge saving in time and costs, the Streumaster improved efficiency on the job since the stabilizing agent could be spread just when it was needed and there was no need to consider weather changes such as rain, which would have forced the jobsite team to cover all the bags if they had been placed manually.

Another very important cost saving advantage of using the Streumaster was that – in accordance with regulations from the Chinese authorities on recycling jobs – when using bagged cement (in this case a 5% mix), the contractor has to add an additional 1% of cement to the mix to compensate for stabilization agents that are lost by being blown away by the wind, or are wasted by poor accuracy of spreading on the road. When spreading the cement using the Wirtgen Streumaster this additional 1% was not required, which made it possible to save a total quantity of 1,850 tons of cement with a cost saving of CNY740,000 and concomitant savings in fuel and energy costs resulting from the reduction in the number of truck journeys required.

Wirtgen Technology Conserves Energy In Inner Mongolian Coalmine

Beijing, China (September 03, 2009) /ChinaNewswire.com/ — By using surface mining technolgy supplied by Wirtgen China, a member of the Germany-based Wirtgen Group, Shenhua Beidian Shengli Energy Company has been able to make large savings in fuel consumption and the corresponding greenhouse gas emissions associated with opencast coal mining.

China Shenhua Shengli Energy Branch is one of the core enterprises of China Shenhua Energy Company Ltd. and is focused on building and operating a large-scale coal power plant. The plan is to build a pithead power plant with a capacity of 16 x 660MW, located beside the opencast coal mine in Xilinhot City, Inner Mongolia. This will be the largest plant of its type in the world to be located directly beside a coal mine.

To transport the initial yearly production of 10 million tons, the original extraction method at the coal mine required about 526,000 trips per year by three axle 20-ton trucks. This was because their real load, when mined and loaded by conventional excavators, was only 19 tons.

China Shenhua is now using Wirtgen Surface Miner 2200SM/3800 equipment that can cut up to 5,000 tons based on an eight-hour work shift. The Surface Miner makes cuts 3.80 meters wide and an average of 25 centimeters deep and leaves the material in a windrow behind the machine. The cut coal is then loaded onto the trucks using wheeled loaders. Due to the cutting technology, the material appears as a pre-crushed product of which 97% is smaller than 100mm. Only sizing is required to get the final particle size and this reduces overall investment and operating costs. As the material is much smaller and consistent, it is possible to load around 10% more material on the same truck or train compared to coal mined by excavators.

This increase in loading has reduced the number of trips required to just 500,000. The 26,000 trips less per year represent less fuel consumption, lower emissions of green house gasses, lower repair and maintenance costs and less traffic. Since there is less spillage on the haul roads, experience shows that this technology is also safer. Further improvements will be achieved since larger dump trucks are coming into operation soon. The same effect of better loading factors also applies to long-distance rail transport.

When asked about the new technique introduced by Wirtgen, Mr. Lui, the President and Chairman of China Shenhua Shengli Energy Branch Co. Ltd, said: "At present, there are two methods of opencast coal mining: power shovel and tip truck, and semi-continuous (power shovel and mobile crusher). The first method involves high running costs and the second method requires a high one-time investment. We want to use the Wirtgen surface mining method to replace these methods and we have already investigated the efficiency and capability of the Wirtgen 4200 SM."

"We went to India last year especially to investigate an opencast mine. This is an opencast coal mine with an annual production of 10 million tons and it uses Wirtgen surface miners exclusively. This method of opencast mining is simple, it eliminates crushing and power shovels, and is very efficient. After visiting this mine, we made our decision immediately," Mr. Lui added.

Recently Wirtgen China and Shenhua Beidian Energy Co. Ltd. Held a Surface Mining Seminar in Xilinhot for other companies who are working in the open cast coal mining field. Wirtgen introduced the complete technology and Shenhua Beidian also spoke of their experience of the product. After the presentations, all attendants went to the coal mine to see the machine in operation.
