Wirtgen China Providing Aid For Quake Struck Kindergarten

Beijing, China (August 07, 2009) /ChinaNewswire.com/ — Wirtgen China, the Chinese arm of the German-headquartered Wirtgen Group, has been actively supporting the kindergarten in Tiantai Town, Qionglai, Sichuan which was a victim of the May 12, 2008 earthquake. Right after the earthquake disaster happened in Sichuan, on May 12, 2008, many Wirtgen China employees spontaneously donated in cash to express their wish to help the people there.

At the same time, the managing director of Wirtgen China, Ulrich Reichert, and the deputy managing director, Thomas Hagspiel, decided that something should be done in the name of the company. As a result they made a joint donation of CNY500,000.

A delegation from Wirtgen China including Anny Zhang, from marketing cold recycling technologies, and Shirley Zhu, the assistant to the managing director, sought local contacts and visited the kindergarten in Tiantai.

A spokesman for Wirtgen said that they selected Tiantai when there were so many children in different places who needed help, because although this area also suffered from the earthquake. It was not as well-known as places that are mentioned again and again in the media and was therefore not so eye-catching. He added that in his understanding this place was, to an extent, forgotten. So Wirtgen's idea was that they should offer help not as "more flowers on the brocade" but as "fuel for snowy weather". Rather than give to places that could get help from other sources, they preferred to give aid where aid was lacking.

The reason for selecting a kindergarten was similar. Primary schools are included in China's nine-year compulsory education system, so the standard primary school buildings in this location had obviously fared much better. Helping with the kindergarten building became the first priority for Wirtgen. Wirtgen decided that rather than just making a donation it was preferable to have the whole process under their control as much as possible, since they wanted to be sure where and how the money was used, who they had helped, and when the kids could benefit from this project. Advice from Gisela Wirtgen in Germany, who has extensive experience of charity projects confirmed this approach. The action group "Kinder in Not" (KiN) "Children in need" was founded in 1983 at the initiative of Gisela Wirtgen, wife of Wirtgen Group founder Rainhard Wirtgen. The objective of KIN is to help under-privileged children in the Third World, without charge or profit. This is achieved through projects, which are always based on the concept of "Help through self-help". The action group is independent of all political or religious organisations and carries out its work regardless of the political or religious situation in the developing countries concerned.

Seoul, Korea (March 28, 2008) /ChinaNewswire.com/ — Korean Air will launch new, nonstop service on June 2nd from Los Angeles to São Paulo, Brazil's economic center. The service between the commercial hubs is Korean Air's third nonstop destination from LAX, joining Seoul and Tokyo.

"Korean Air's non stop flight between LAX and Sao Paulo is a key route for people who want to conduct business in the world's second largest city," said Jong Eun Lee, Korean Air's regional vice president for the Americas. "Korean Air already offers the best options for travel to Asia, but we're also a global airline that will now provide the much needed passenger and cargo service between Los Angeles and Sao Paulo that no other company has the scope to do."

Subject to government approval, KE061 will operate Monday-Wednesday-Friday flights between LAX and São Paulo (GRU) beginning June 2nd using Boeing 777-200 aircraft in a three class configuration (First, Business, Economy). Every seat will feature Korean Air's award-winning audio-video on demand entertainment system.

The flight is tentatively scheduled to depart LAX at 7:30pm and arrive in Sao Paulo at 11:00am the next morning. The return flight will leave Sao Paulo at 1:30pm and arrive LAX at 9:30pm the same day. Korean Air will be the only airline with nonstop service between Los Angeles and Brazil.

Korean Air is the largest cargo carrier in the world and carries more air cargo at LAX than any other passenger airline. The airline also is the largest transpacific passenger carrier out of Los Angeles, and flies from more cities in the Americas to more cities in China than any other airline in the world. This new service will provide an important air cargo connection between Asia and Brazil that will generate a significant positive economic impact on the Southern California economy.

The airline unveiled a new carbon offset scheme, and backing for deforestation prevention in Brazil and research into the effects of aircraft's non-carbon emissions.

The upgraded offset scheme uses UN certified emissions reductions to help finance clean energy projects in developing countries.

Customers offsetting their flight emissions will be supporting a new windfarm in one of the poorest regions of China, as well as run-of-the-river hydro electric plants in China and Brazil.

The scheme is more user-friendly with customers able to buy their offset in one transaction when they book their flight on ba.com.

Hilary Benn, Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Secretary, welcomed the scheme: 'After avoiding and reducing our emissions, offsetting has a role to play in helping us all to tackle climate change. That's why Government has been working to set up a code of best practice for companies who sell carbon offsetting,' he said.

'I hope this welcome scheme will encourage BA customers to offset their flights and so help to tackle emissions from aviation.'

In addition to the offset scheme, British Airways is to invest in a range of projects to help protect the Brazilian rainforest and improve understanding of ways of combating one of the largest sources of greenhouse gases.

British Airways will also back work led by Cambridge University aimed at establishing robust scientific understanding of the non-CO2 effects of aviation by 2012.

Silla Maizey, head of corporate responsibility, said the new initiatives underlined the seriousness of the airline's commitment to tackling climate change.

She went on: 'We were the first airline to offer carbon offsets, and we intend to remain at the forefront in this area.

Hollywood director Scorsese recently won an Oscar for The Departed, which was also named Best Picture at the lavish ceremony in Los Angeles.

The World Cinema Foundation will present three films at the 60th Cannes International Film Festival. From Morocco, Brazil, and Romania, the films represent a broad range of filmmaking and were chosen to inaugurate and embody the goals of WCF.

Qatar Airways Chief Executive Officer Akbar Al Baker said he was delighted that the airline was supporting a worthy cause, which was helping restore cinematic treasures from around the world.

"This is indeed an honour to be associated with the world of art and entertainment, which reflects the importance that the film industry plays in our world today," he said.

"Qatar Airways is proud to be showing a host of international movies onboard our aircraft flying around the world and we look forward to showing many of these restored cinematic classics under the auspices of the World Cinema Foundation in due course.

"Qatar as a country is emerging on the international scene, making a name for itself in many quarters. Art, culture and heritage are very close to our heart, so we are excited about this project that the World Cinema Foundation is highlighting."

The World Cinema Foundation has an Advisory Board made up of renowned film directors from around the world – Stephen Frears, Fatih Akin, Souleymane Cissé, Guillermo Del Toro, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Abbas Kiarostami. Ermanno Olmi, Cristi Puiu, Walter Salles, Abderrahmane Sissako, Elia Suleiman, Bertrand Tavernier, Wim Wenders and Wong Kar Wai.
