UK (January 10, 2008) /ChinaNewswire.com/ — British Airways has welcomed the UK Department for Transport's announcement that it has given approval to a number of UK airports to remove the one-bag restriction on hand baggage.

With effect from January 7, 2008, British Airways will re-introduce its two-piece hand baggage allowance for customers transferring through and departing from Heathrow, as well as a number of other UK airports.

Ms Sara Thorley, British Airways China Manager, said, "We are extremely pleased to see these restrictions lifted. We have argued for many months that the one-bag restriction was a serious inconvenience for passengers and not justified on security grounds.

"From January 7, our customers will be able to take two pieces of hand baggage when transferring through or departing from Heathrow, placing it on a level footing with airports across the rest of the world."

•British Airways will re-introduce its two-piece hand baggage allowance for passengers transferring through or departing from London Heathrow, London City, Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow or Manchester.

•From January 7, British Airways customers' hand baggage allowance when transferring through or departing from these UK airports, and all other worldwide airports, will be:

One bag no bigger than 56 cm x 45 cm x 25 cm (22 inches x 17.5 inches x 9.85 inches) (including wheels, pockets and handles);

One briefcase or laptop-sized bag;

A maximum hand baggage weight of 23Kg applies and customers must be able to lift the bag into the overhead lockers in the aircraft cabin unaided.

•There is no change on the restrictions on the quantity of liquids allowed through UK airport security. Customers must ensure that all liquid containers do not exceed 100ml and are carried in a clear, re-sealable plastic bag that can be easily closed.

•The one-bag restriction remains in place at London Gatwick and a small number of other UK airports. The airline will continue to work with the DfT and the individual airport operators towards a removal of restrictions for all British Airways customers travelling through all UK airports.
