Recycling Of Demolition Waste, Demolished Concrete, And Spoil Onsite Cuts Material Costs And Carbon Emissions

Beijing, China (February 10, 2010) /ChinaNewswire.com/ — Germany-based Wirtgen Group is to introduce onsite-recycling technology developed by its Kleemann GmbH subsidiary into China when it will be showcased in China at Bauma China in Shanghai in November 2010.

Kleemann GmbH recycling plants take demolition waste, demolished concrete, and spoil and convert into high-quality aggregate for the construction industry. By recycling demolition waste onsite the process can dramatically reduce the amount of energy and CO2 emissions required in hauling material away from a demolition site. And instead of demolition waste ending up in land-fill or being used as low grade hardcore it can be used as aggregate for the next building project on that site: thus reducing material costs and the need to extract fresh aggregate by quarrying.

The core of the process is a Kleemann impact crusher which is fed with demolition material that has been screened for size with large particles (more than 60mm grain size) being fed into the crusher while smaller particles are put aside for further processing. The crushed aggregate is then separated at 20 mm, 40 mm and 100 mm sizes, and is then cleaned from light materials. The ferrous metals contained in the demolition waste and demolished concrete are then removed by electromagnets and go for recycling in steel plants. The recycled product can then be used in the next building project on the same site.

And example of this technology in action Europe's largest recycling plant is located in the vicinity of Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport. The turnkey plant was designed and built by Kleemann for processing demolition waste, demolished concrete and asphalt into high-quality aggregate for the construction industry. It includes, among other units, Kleemann's largest impact crusher model SHB 20/160. The recycling plant has a feed capacity of up to 700 tons of material per hour. One year of planning, construction and assembly was needed before the new recycling plant was put into operation. To protect the environment from dust and noise, the entire plant was enclosed with a trapezoidal panel construction.

The recycled product is upgraded with natural sand and cement to a hydraulically bound base layer, and is presently used for soil stabilization at Schiphol Airport.

Beijing, China (January 15, 2010) /ChinaNewswire.com/ — The kindergarten in Tiantai Town, Qionglai, Sichuan, which was a victim of the May 12, 2008 earthquake, has been officially re-opened as Wirtgen Tiantai Kindergarten. The opening was celebrated by the schoolchildren with dancing and singing, and was attended by VIPs from Wirtgen China, the local government, and Fuhuashengye Road Machinery Co., Ltd.

Wirtgen China, the Chinese arm of the German-headquartered Wirtgen Group, has been actively supporting the kindergarten in Tiantai Town, Qionglai, Sichuan which was a victim of the May 12, 2008 earthquake. Right after the earthquake disaster happened in Sichuan, on May 12, 2008, many Wirtgen China employees spontaneously donated in cash to express their wish to help the people there. And, at the same time, the managing director of Wirtgen China, Ulrich Reichert, and the deputy managing director, Thomas Hagspiel, decided that something should be done in the name of the company. As a result they made a joint donation of CNY500,000. On hearing about the kindergarten one of Wirtgen China's customers, Mr. Tong Wei, the president of , spontaneously sponsored a 200-square-meter playground with a donation of CNY30,000.

Attending the opening ceremony were local dignitaries including Mr. Li Xianjun, the deputy mayor of Qionglai City; Madam Wang Hua, the chairlady of the Women's Federation of Qionglai City; Mr. Wu Chengwu, the director of Qionglai Education Bureau; Madam Chen Xia, the chief executive of the Tiantaishan Township Government; and Mr. Li Ziguo; the principal of Wirtgen Tiantai Kindergarten and of Tiantaishan Primary School. Wirtgen China was represented by Mr. Ulrich Reichert, the CEO and managing director of Wirtgen China; together with his wife, Mrs. Miranda Reichert; and Shirley Zhu the public relations manager and assistant to the MD of Wirtgen China. Also present was Mr. Tong Wei, the president of Fuhuashengye Road Machinery Co., Ltd., who sponsored the new playground for the kindergarten.

The new 480-square-meter kindergarten building has three classrooms, a function room, an office for the teachers, a kitchen, a cloak room, and a guard's room. For recreation the kindergarten has a new 200-square-meter playground. Currently the kindergarten has five teachers and 50 pupils and they expect to have more than 60 pupils after Chinese New Year 2010.

Wirtgen decided to help Tiantai because it was not as well-known as places that were being mentioned again and again by the media in the aftermath of the earthquake, and it was therefore getting less attention. Rather than give to places that could get help from other sources, the company and its employees preferred to give aid where aid was lacking. The reason for selecting a kindergarten was similar. Primary schools are included in China's nine-year compulsory education system, so the standard primary school buildings in this location had obviously fared much better. Thus helping with the kindergarten building became the first priority for Wirtgen.

Wirtgen decided that rather than just making a donation it was preferable to have the whole process under their control as much as possible, since they wanted to be sure where and how the money was used, who they had helped, and when the kids could benefit from this project. Advice from Ms. Gisela Wirtgen in Germany, who has extensive experience of charity projects confirmed this approach. The action group "Kinder in Not" (KiN) "Children in need" was founded in 1983 at the initiative of Gisela Wirtgen, wife of Wirtgen Group founder Rainhard Wirtgen. The objective of KIN is to help under-privileged children in the Third World, without charge or profit. This is achieved through projects, which are always based on the concept of "Help through self-help". The action group is independent of all political or religious organizations and carries out its work regardless of the political or religious situation in the developing countries concerned.

Beijing, China (September 25, 2009) /ChinaNewswire.com/ — Thirty years ago, the vast majority of China's huge population had never eaten a piece of chocolate. Yet as Deng Xiaoping gradually transformed China from the early 1980s through the early 2000s and a poor, oppressed communist state became a powerful, modern market-driven socialist economy, hundreds of millions of China's 1.3 billion people turned into ravenous consumers of everything—but especially anything exotic. That meant a wide open market, and potential goldmine, for the makers of the sweet, creamy treat that Americans gobble up, in staggering quantities of about three billion pounds annually.

CHOCOLATE FORTUNES: The Battle for the Hearts, Minds, and Wallets of China's Consumers (AMACOM; October 13, 2009; $27.95 Hardcover) is the first inside, blow-by-blow account of the war waged among the five titans of chocolate—Hershey, Nestle, Cadbury, Mars, and Ferrero Rocher—for the taste buds and passions of China's new consumer class. A former executive for two of the "Big Five" chocolate companies in China, Lawrence L. Allen presents a gripping business story wrapped up in the intriguing tale of East meeting West through the introduction of an icon of the western world's decadence and self-indulgence. Throughout, Allen offers lessons for anyone raring to do business in this dynamic, complex, and continually evolving country, which is, almost by the day, acquiring the economic and political clout to play a preeminent role in shaping our global future. What's more, and equally riveting, he delves into the mystique of a confection with a universal ability to create emotional connections while steadily fueling cravings.

Over 100 million strong, the children of China's one-child-per-family policy, established in the late 1970s, would be the first generation of Chinese natives to grow up eating chocolate from a very early age. Once hooked, these "Little Emperors" would likely lead chocolate consumption patterns to mirror those of developed chocolate-loving nations within their lifetimes. CHOCOLATE FORTUNES traces how the world's top five chocolate producers competed in a high-stakes race to win the brand loyalty of China's youngest and most influential consumers. While each chocolate giant forged its own path to reaching the target consumer, they all faced the same daunting obstacles to manufacturing, marketing, distributing, and selling their foreign, fragile, and expensive product. With its lack of a stable, air-conditioned supply chain, few supermarkets beyond cities such as Shanghai, Beijing, and Guangzhou, and its cultural preference for eating rich "heaty" foods only in cold weather seasons, China proved far from the ideal nation for launching a chocolate revolution.

Focusing individually on the breakthrough strategies and major missteps of each chocolate contender, CHOCOLATE FORTUNES reveals:

How Hershey, maker of the great American chocolate bar, brought a much-need will to find a way in China, made significant strides in overcoming its less-than-stellar international track record, and eventually broke the hearts of China's chocolate lovers by withholding its Kisses;

How Nestle, the Swiss-based global food powerhouse, brought enormous resources and extensive experience in global markets to China, yet wound up confounding China's chocolate lovers by switching from less than its very best chocolate;

How Cadbury, the esteemed chocolate of the British empire, first weaned Chinese palates on their luscious Australia-made Dairy Milk Chocolate and then alienated discriminating fans by inadvertently replacing imported quality with a cheesy-tasting, China-made substitute;

How Ferrero Rocher, the noted Italian chocolatier, successfully leveraged its unique product—a delicate chocolate and hazelnut confection encased in an elegant gold foil wrapper—to appeal to the national Chinese habit of splurging on exotic gifts;

How Mars, an American family-owned company with a reputation as a tough street fighter, made a bold move by being the first foreign company to begin manufacturing chocolate in China and made an outstanding early impression on chocolate lovers with its Dove delights.

As the final chapter makes clear, the battle royal for China's chocolate loyalty continues, with fledgling local manufacturers now mixing it up with the foreign titans. Capturing the drama and tensions on the front lines of a still largely unclaimed consumer frontier, CHOCOLATE FORTUNES provides food for thought for everyone with a stake in the what one-fifth of the world's population consumes.

"Informative, cautionary and essential, this book is a must-read for executives currently doing business, or planning to, in this most volatile and critical market."
—Publishers Weekly

"No consumer goods company can call itself "Global" without having meaningful presence in China: a must-win market for long term survival! Lawrence Allen has the inside scoop on how our iconic chocolate brands fared within the rapid development of China's retail industry over the past thirty years. Chocolate Fortunes reveals lessons that aren't taught in business schools and that could apply to any consumer goods company that ever struggled with, or dreamed of success in the world's biggest market!"
—Michael Wong, Regional Vice President-Asia Pacific of WM Wrigley Jr. Co. (Retired)

"With a balanced focus on business, culture and history, Lawrence Allen explains successes and failures in adapting global strategies in China's complex market in a way that redefines "think global, act local." Chocolate Fortunes is a must-read for today's international executive seeking to understand China."
—William Tung, Vice President of International Sales and Operations of Columbia Sportswear

"Chocolate Fortunes provides a fascinating and entertaining account of chocolate companies' ventures into China and how they faced the opportunities and challenges there. With a clear understanding of the vital human element required to succeed in China, Lawrence Allen offers critical observations for any company engaged in or, about to explore the china market. It is required reading for our global team of professional consultants."

Beijing, China (August 07, 2009) /ChinaNewswire.com/ — Wirtgen China, the Chinese arm of the German-headquartered Wirtgen Group, has been actively supporting the kindergarten in Tiantai Town, Qionglai, Sichuan which was a victim of the May 12, 2008 earthquake. Right after the earthquake disaster happened in Sichuan, on May 12, 2008, many Wirtgen China employees spontaneously donated in cash to express their wish to help the people there.

At the same time, the managing director of Wirtgen China, Ulrich Reichert, and the deputy managing director, Thomas Hagspiel, decided that something should be done in the name of the company. As a result they made a joint donation of CNY500,000.

A delegation from Wirtgen China including Anny Zhang, from marketing cold recycling technologies, and Shirley Zhu, the assistant to the managing director, sought local contacts and visited the kindergarten in Tiantai.

A spokesman for Wirtgen said that they selected Tiantai when there were so many children in different places who needed help, because although this area also suffered from the earthquake. It was not as well-known as places that are mentioned again and again in the media and was therefore not so eye-catching. He added that in his understanding this place was, to an extent, forgotten. So Wirtgen's idea was that they should offer help not as "more flowers on the brocade" but as "fuel for snowy weather". Rather than give to places that could get help from other sources, they preferred to give aid where aid was lacking.

The reason for selecting a kindergarten was similar. Primary schools are included in China's nine-year compulsory education system, so the standard primary school buildings in this location had obviously fared much better. Helping with the kindergarten building became the first priority for Wirtgen. Wirtgen decided that rather than just making a donation it was preferable to have the whole process under their control as much as possible, since they wanted to be sure where and how the money was used, who they had helped, and when the kids could benefit from this project. Advice from Gisela Wirtgen in Germany, who has extensive experience of charity projects confirmed this approach. The action group is independent of all political or religious organisations and carries out its work regardless of the political or religious situation in the developing countries concerned.

KiN currently maintains or supports a total of 21 projects in the Philippines, India, Chile, Argentina and Brazil. The basis for this work is provided by several thousand sponsorships of children, schools and projects provided by individuals, families, schools, clubs, businesses etc., as well as individual donations for the various activities.

The founder and president of the KiN action group, Gisela Wirtgen, has been awarded the Order of Merit of the State of Rheinland-Pfalz as well as the German Federal Order of Merit for her work. These prestigious awards are also an expression of thanks to all the unpaid helpers who have supported her in her endeavours to provide humanitarian aid over a period of many years. Top sportsman Georg Hackl (three times Olympic Champion and World Champion, Sportsman of the Year 1998) is a committed international ambassador for our action group.

After two visits and many telephone calls and email discussions, a contract was finalized in March 2009. The communication and coordination was done among three parties: Wirtgen China (as the donor) the Women's Federation of Qionglai, Sichuan Province (as the Money Receiver, officially assigned and accepted in both China and internationally) and the Education Bureau of Qionglai, Sichuan (as the Project Owner). The kindergarten, which was set up in 1981, has 64 pupils. The principal of the kindergarten, as well as the town's primary school, is Li Ziguo.

Beijing, China (August 05, 2009) /ChinaNewswire.com/ — The Tottenham Hotspur Foundation teamed up with Special Olympics East Asia (SOEA) on July 31st to demonstrate the power of football by bringing together Foundation staff, Special Olympics East Asia coaches and volunteers to deliver a very unique coaching clinic for local Special Olympics athletes with intellectual disabilities. SOEA officials and volunteers from local universities also presented.

The football coaching clinic involved 20 Special Olympics athletes' ages 16 years plus of mixed ability and was aimed at creating a fun filled experience while demonstrating communication skills required to coach athletes who have a intellectual disability.

First team goalkeeping coach Tony Parks worked alongside the Club's Foundation coaches at Si De Park in Beijing, bringing his coaching expertise to the session.

He commented on the success of the coaching clinic, "The Foundation coaches are doing a fantastic job, they put in a lot of hard work in the local community in and around Tottenham and now they are on a bigger stage, bringing their work out to places like China.

"My overriding impression was just seeing how happy the athletes are playing football, seeing them work in teams, it was a fantastic experience. Football has a role to play and a responsibility in the community. You see how good the club is at going out and reaching to all parts of the community and it's important we maintain those links."

Ms. Anna Chan, Managing Director of SOEA said, "we are very grateful that coaches from Tottenham Hotspur facilitate this football clinic for Special Olympics athletes during their tight schedule, providing our athletes with first-rate professional football coaching experience. Special Olympics launched Global Football Development Initiative last year to promote football around the world. We believe that the popular sport of football will help Special Olympics athletes to enjoy the fun of sports and promote acceptance and inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities among general public."

The Tottenham Hotspur Foundation is involved with Special Olympics at local, national and international level through their commitment towards making sport inclusive, and providing the most appropriate player pathway for disabled people from grass roots to elite levels of sport.

The Foundation is supported by Tottenham Hotspur Football club to promote awareness of the Special Olympics movement, recruit new athletes and jointly fundraise to create innovative partnership work.

The Tottenham Hotspur Foundation is the Official Special Olympics Europe/Eurasia Grassroots Football Provider. This partnership focuses on delivering specialised coaching sessions across Europe and elsewhere around the world, such as the one in Beijing.

Beijing, China (July 31, 2009) /ChinaNewswire.com/ — Intelligent People Solutions (IPS) launched Web Based Computer Programming Instruction pilot programs with 15 universities in China. The pilot programs began in February of 2009 and included universities in Shanxi, Guangdong, Hunan, Liaoning and Special Administrative Regions, Beijing and Shanghai.

The pilot programs introduced Codelab to Chinese Introductory Programming Students; Codelab is a web-based interactive programming exercise system for introductory programming classes in Python, Java, C++, C and other languages. IPS assisted universities participating in the pilot program by customizing Codelab content to match each school's syllabus and textbook requirements.

"The customization work was actually quite easy as many of the schools used text books written in the West. It was gratifying however to see how quickly Chinese students grasped the programming concepts and moved on to more advanced exercises," commented David Arnow, lead developer for Codelab.

The Ministry of Education in China reports over 2.3 million students enroll in introductory programming courses each year. University enrollments are on the rise and vocational and independent universities, which are joint ventures between State Schools and Private organizations, have benefitted the most by accommodating students who are not eligible to enter into a State university.

"By establishing the reputation of learning tools, like Codelab, with State run Universities, we are positioning our self for the much more lucrative private education market", remarked Alistair McArthur, Sales and Marketing Director for IPS. "Less than two thirds of university graduates are employable, but their families are more than willing to invest in educational and vocational resources that will provide their children an advantage, and that is the market IPS is targeting".
